With Private labels being 33% cheaper than brands and, discounters Aldi and Lidl expanding trade by 40% in 2008 (Retail News Dec 08), consumers are looking for more justifications to pay the premium price. People are finding smart ways to maintain the standard of living they have become accustomed to. They are trading down, buying less and becoming detectives for special offers.

The man who made stay at home holiday breaks [...]

The man who made stay at home holiday breaks in Ireland a “must do” option and in the process delivered the most effective Fáilte Ireland communications programme ever measured, was selected as Marketer of the Year 2010.

John Concannon, Director of Market Development at Fáilte Ireland was awarded the title following the success of his Discover Ireland ‘Fun Starts Here’ campaign. The fully integrated campaign was developed by the DDFH&B Group.

This included the TV, radio and print campaign, supported by a full PR campaign and online strategy and implementation. The core objective of the campaign was to hold Irelands share of the holiday market, given the signifcant decline in the size of the market in 2009.

IPSOS tracking data up to July 2010 showed a strong increase in the number of trips taken by Irish people in Ireland up by 10%. There were 17% more unique visitors to the website versus 2009.

Behaviour & Attitudes reported that the campaign created by DDFH&B was the single most effective communications programme their advertising monitor had ever measured.

Youth Truths is an exciting project about Irish youth: their tastes and views are ever-changing which makes them the most elusive group of people to reach.

The DDFH&B Planners wanted to really get under the skin of the emerging generation of “digital natives” and recessionistas, to investigate how the current economic and social changes have and will impact their lives, their spending habits and their view of brands.

We conducted a large scale research project with Irish 16-25 year olds, incorporating a 750 quantitative study (in conjunction with Millward Brown), 9 focus groups across the country and 9 filmed interview.

People are making little changes but feel they can do more. However the recession is most certainly holding up progress in this area with people unwilling to spend.
